Who's blaming who?

You can read a painted bible over covered city walls
Or hear men in suits with red ties who aren’t interested in us at all
Disregard for what is right, they make decisions against our will
Agendas’ clever copy droned in short sentences, cut shorter still

Official hands reach out to help you, but are loaded with a gun
The message is clear enough, obligation for every one
And taxes taken from our pay aren’t meant for having fun
Colleagues glance sideways at each other, then give up, or run

People on the streets cover their eyes with fists, in anxious fear
A look across your shoulder and find cameras watching, near
A box, a bag, a handkerchief - seized weapons on display
Not hearing truth in news reports, TV sports have stolen thoughts away

Pristine experts in white coats, smirking grins with mouths that cover up
They know how to do a lot of things: pay thieves, walk past a beggar’s cup
Rising poverty forces mothers outside to bring back frozen trays
Who’s blaming who is more a problem than what anybody says

Plastic faces smile with pure white teeth, an entertainment game
Expressionless faces stare back without a word to say
Since a question can’t be squeezed into a brain going numb
Talk doesn’t matter any more, text and games stole both our thumbs

Each room once had a single globe that glowed in peace at nighttime
Now lightening strips glare down brighter than the midday sunshine
Call out to a neighbor, and you’ll find they’ve moved away
Surrounded now by strangers who never greet each other on any given day

You think there’s trouble outside the home, inside it’s getting cold
Owning the Koran makes you a terrorist, you easily fit the mold
Two people meeting any place could be identified as a crime
Being black or brown too often ends in innocents doing time

Communication’s growing ugly as technicians lead the way
It makes a child easy to love, press a button and walk away
One more gadget makes life easier, but there’s no room on the floor
Having everything you want is making too many people poor

Walk on water; raise the dead; a virgin birth; all such a sham
Lies are now the common way to power, as truth falsely claimed
In a village lies a baby, its last breath for want of thirst
In a capital full of fat dark cars, money in an offshore bank comes first

Pretending to be wealthy, shopping sprees relieve the stress
In a comfort zone of happiness, who cares for all the rest?
Wake up and see you staring back, the image stays the same
What did you do to make it, and who’s going to take the blame?
