On Bennelong Point

Looking out at a bridge
Looking into my life
Sitting here, nothing really matters
Polished stone steps reach to the sky
Where people climb the bridge
For a view
To say they've done it

And looking down, what do they see?
Not me, peering back
From a shady cool cave
By the harbor's wake-swelling sea
Everyone's here for the view
From there to somewhere

I'm on my way, going home
Remote oasis, a cultured town
That inspired adolescent dreams
Before the big leap
Before life turned around

On both banks
Gray block towers stand
Tugging on wires
Across expanses of time
To everyone's destination: the other side
When you reach there
Nothing’s different
Looking both ways - the same
Facing the other way

People walking everywhere
In every direction
Many faces, languages, cultures
All doing the same
Here on Bennelong Point
Viewing people walking the other way
